How does the software behind slots work?

There are many misconceptions in how slot machines work. For this reason, at PepperMill Casino we have decided to create this blog to clarify all possible doubts you may have!

How does the RNG work?

Slot machines are using a RNG (Random number generator). This causes completely random results with no subject to predictable patterns. RNG guarantees a fair gaming experience, free from any subjective interference.

  • Unpredictable: Although the RNG follows a pattern, the software algorithm follows a dynamic that is virtually impossible to predict.

    • Uniform: This software produces random numbers with a uniform distribution, i.e. on each spin they are equally eligible

      • Intermittent: Each time a player presses the play button, the algorithm generates a number that determines the final position of the reels and the combination of symbols that will appear on the screen

        • Fast: The process is done in milliseconds, creating the results visible to the player on the screen real fast.

          • Independence: A key aspect of the RNG is that each spin is independent of the previous ones. There is no memory in the machine to remember past results or a pre-set pattern. On each spin, the software starts over again.

            Auditable and legal

Slots software is obligated to pass different controls to verify that the RNG is working correctly.

Online casinos must comply with certain standards and have the corresponding licenses for being allowed to operate legally.

            What is RTP in slots?

Depending on the machine, a RTP (return to player) is established. Slot machine software must be programmed to give a certain payout range, depending on how much is played. Among many other aspects, this is one of the main factors recurrently audited in the previous point.

This RTP calculation is made over an extended period of play, always on a long-term basis. A certain percentage is determined, ranging from 90% to close to 100%, depending on the betting units received per unit wagered. However, this does not mean that when the RTP is set at 95% that if you bet €10, you will receive €9.5. This is because individual results can vary considerably and it does not guarantee short-term rewards. Broadly speaking, this is the RTP scale:

            • Very high RTP: Slots with an RTP above 98% are considered very high performing.

              • High: Between 97% and 98% is usually still considered above average.

                • Returns in between 95% and 97% are considered standard in the industry, where most slots operate.

                  • Slots with a RTP between 90% and 94% are considered moderate-low yielding. They offer a balance between regular payouts and more substantial prizes.

                    • Slots with an RTP below 90% are considered low long-term performers.

Difference between RTP and volatility in slots software

While RTP determines the amount of winnings received, volatility determines the frequency. Some slot software determines more recurrent, lower value prizes, while others determine less frequent, but higher prizes. In the first case we speak of low volatility, and in the second of high volatility.

Generally, slots with a higher RTP usually have a lower volatility, at the same time, the ones with a lower RTP have a higher volatility, meaning that winnings are less predictable.

Game info of an online dice slot called “Coins of Ra” at PepperMill Casino where we can see that it has high volatility and medium RTP

Tips for choosing slots with the best software

If you play at a certified operator, you will always have a fair gaming experience, with audited and certified slots software. The best ones, always certified, are popular for having this attribute. But it never hurts to do one last check before you play:

                      • Look for slots with a higher RTP, always above 90% and ideally above 95%.

                        • Control volatility: If you have a low budget, you may prefer more frequent wins.

                          • Consider additional features such as free spins, bonus rounds and wild symbols.

                            • Control the minimum and maximum bets.

                              • Read reviews from other players. Generally, the most popular slots will already come with a lot of reviews and popularity.
