Bluffing in poker

Bluffing is a fundamental skill in poker that involves convincing your opponents that you have a stronger hand than you do, with the intention to make them fold. Mastering when and how to bluff effectively will improve your game and increase your chances of winning.

It's impossible to influence the result when playing dice slots or dice games. But you might have the power to influence the result when playing card games against opponents!

We will explain all the tips and tricks to bluff like a professional poker player such as Phil Hellmuth.

What is a bluff in poker?

A bluff in poker is an attempt to make another player, or group of players, fold with a better poker hand than yours. This can be achieved by making a bet or raising the pot, representing that you have a stronger hand than them.

If the bluff attempt is successful, the player wins the entirety of the current pot.

When does it make sense to bluff?

It's best to bluff when other players have weak hands, but knowing how to identify this can be difficult and takes a lot of practice.

As the rounds progress, you are likely to spot signs that a player has a weak hand, known as 'tells'. Some of these may include:

  • Timing: These are rather common and are one of the few tells that can be identified while playing online. According to statistics, if players take a long time to decide, they have a strong hand or are trying to bluff. Interestingly, players can also bet incredibly quick if they are trying to get a fold or check, while strong hands tend to take an 'average' time to play correctly.

    • Body language: When playing live at the table, body language can give away the strength of someone's hand. Lack of eye contact, talking frequently, and offering advice can be indications that someone is trying to bluff.

      • Bet size: Most players have a specific betting range that they apply to strong hands. If the bet size changes dramatically, it could be a sign that the player is trying to bluff. A good way to check this is to take note of the typical betting range of most players at the table.

If you can find reliable signs that a player has a weak hand, the success rate of bluffs can increase considerably.

        How to bluff?

There are a few tips on how to bluff correctly. The first is to start early and be consistent, bluffing in a similar way to how you would play strong hands. If players start bluffing early in the round, there is a chance to chop the blinds (when all other players fold to the blinds before the flop) and slowly build up capital.

It is also important to always be alert at the table. No matter if you plan to bluff or not. This will allow you to be aware of other players' tendencies, for example if they are betting more or less aggressively.

Finally, being unpredictable at the table is another way to ensure that bluffs are successful. This applies not only to bluffing but to your game in general.

        Types of bluffs

The four main types of bluffs in poker that players can use at the table are the following:

        • Continuation bet bluff: This type of bluff revolves around the opponent not forming a strong hand with the community cards as they are dealt.

          • Semi-bluff: A semi-bluff can be used if the hand is not good at the time, but there is a high probability that it will improve throughout the round.

            • Zero equity bluff: This is the opposite of a semi-bluff, i.e. when there is almost no chance of a strong hand forming with the community cards. In this case, getting the other players to fold is the only way to win the pot.

              • Opportunistic bluffing: When the other players appear to be uninterested in the current pot, a unique opportunity to bluff may present itself. Getting the other players to fold is more likely to succeed if this lack of interest is due to a weak hand.

What are the risks of bluffing in poker?

Bluffing also has its risks. The biggest and most obvious is facing a strong hand. It is rare for a player to fold with a good hand and instead continue to bet for value. This can result in losing the pot or, worse, going all-in and getting beaten.
