Doubling down in Blackjack: meaning, strategy and tips

Doubling in Blackjack is an option that allows you to double your original bet after receiving your first two cards. When you select this option, you receive exactly one more card afterward. In most variants of the game, the player may only double down after receiving the first two cards and before splitting or taking any additional cards. This is also clearly explained in the rules.

Strategy

According to the basic strategy, it is best to double when you have strong initial cards (9, 10 or 11 points) and the dealer has a low card. This is because there is a high probability of getting a high number with just one additional card.

There are also a few cases when you should not opt to double down:

  • When your hand value is between 12 and 16 points since there is a high risk of going over 21,

    • When the dealer shows an ace because you will lose your initial bet and your additional bet if the dealer ends up with a blackjack, and

      • When you have a weak hand.

        Tips

        • Read the game rules before you start playing. Depending on the casino they might not let you double with certain hands or bets

          • We strongly recommend you to practice this strategy with a demo version of the game in our online casino. Try First Person Blackjack for example to get familiar with it.

            • Be aware of your bankroll, because Blackjack is a game of chance and there is a possibility of failure and indeed losing your bet.
